Tupelo Honey Playlist 7/7/09

Lost a good man last week: Joe Paquin 1948-2009. He had just released what I think was the best album he ever did, Only Human. It's always such a moving experience to play someone's music after their death. It was hard not to shed a tear while playing Joe on tonight's show. He will be missed.

Till Next Week

Tupelo Honey Playlist 6/30/09

In americana it's all about the family...?

The other day I was playing Robyn Ludwick's 2004 album For So Long, it has one of my all-time favorite tunes on it "Virginia." I got to thinking about her husband John Ludwick and all the music he's been involved in over the years, then I was thinking about Robyn's brothers Bruce Robison who did one of my favorite americana albums of 2008 and her other brother Charlie Robison whose new album Beautiful Day I've been playing the snot out of. Then I got to thinking about Charlie's recent divorce to Dixie Chicks star Emily Robison and how his new song "Feelin' Good Again" was such a perfect divorce tune. Then I got to thinking about Bruce's wife, americana superstar, Kelly Willis and wondered how anyone could stay married and be full-time in the music business.

Hell the Robison family would make a great afternoon soap opera. I'd watch just for the music.

Anyway, after all that thinkin' I decided that this week I'd play something from each of the Robison siblings. Maybe next week I'll start drafting the soap script.

Tupelo Honey Playlist 6/23/09

The amount of music that exists in this genre I call "americana" can sometimes be truly overwhelming. What amazes me is how little of it is crap. There's so many bands making good americana music it blows my mind. I try to keep my very little radio show to the absolute creme-de-la-creme, but there's an absolute ocean full of tunes utterly worthy of radio play.

This week I was turned onto a band I'd never heard of (like that doesn't happen every week). What makes this one incredible is they have a song that might be one of the best I've ever heard. The band is Woody Pines and the song is "Ducan and Brady." If you didn't get a chance to hear it, find it, you won't be disappointed.

Tupelo Honey Playlist 6/16/09

Finally got my hand on the new disc from Son Volt. Wow. The new CD sounds as good as Trace did the first time I gave it a spin.

Was also very impressed with the "new" one from Scott H. Biram. Never been a fan of his but I am now.

Other noteworthy new releases I played this week: Patterson Hood, Gavin Wahl-Stephens, JD Thompson, Leslie & The Badgers, The Mystix, and also Brian Ledford whose title track will be a strong contender for my choice of "song of the year."

I also revisited a few new releases. One in particular that came out at the beginning of the year by Trevor Alquire. It just reminded me of how great this year has been for americana music.

Till Next Week

Tupelo Honey Playlist 6/9/09

Another week of phenomenal new music. For me I've been chomping at the bit to get my hands on Ryan Bingham's sophomore effort Roadhouse Sun. The hype was big but the disc is even bigger. Going from rodeo cowboy to musician is no easy feat, Bingham does it with absolute perfection.

The Belleville Outfit has a new one called Time To Stand. These youngsters have already experienced more successes than most musicians have in a lifetime. From iconic status in and around Austin to the accolades about this new release, these kids might even become mainstream. Excellent new disc, I'll be playing a bunch more of it in upcoming weeks.

Tupelo Honey Playlist 6/2/09

Quite a few good new releases this week: The Lovell Sisters, Charlie Robinson, Jaime Kindleyside, Bearfoot, and one that really surprised me Ben Mallott.

I say it surprised me because I didn't expect much after glancing at the CD case. The picture of him in the barber chair reeked of bad country music. That and the fact that his last name conjures up images of bad redneck hair-do's. Boy was I wrong! Great songwriting, great production, great CD. Nice work Mr. Mallott, goes to show you: don't judge a book by it's cover.

Should have a bunch of cool new ones for next week.

Till Then,
Ciao

Tupelo Honey Playlist 5/26/09

Scott Foley is the DJ who put americana on KRVM. Foley once said to me that the thing about this genre is that there are more people making it than listening to it.

Zoe Muth from Ballard, Washington is a great example. Her music IMO is a perfect example of what this genre has to offer yet look at the photo of her playing at some coffee shop. Lots of empty seats. In fact, it looks like her roomate and a friend are the only people in the audience.

She doesn't even have a CD yet she's better then just about anything out there. Check her out on-line at www.myspace.com/zoemuth or just keep listening to Tupelo Honey and I'll keep playing her incredible music.
