Tupelo Honey Playlist 11/10/09

Played some great new gems this week from people you've never heard of. Doug and Telisha Williams have a wonderful CD out called Ghost of the Knoxville Girl. Judy Tampa and Bunko Squad just released an uninteresting disc with, surprise surprise, a couple of earth shatteringly great tunes. Mark Lennon from L.A. has a very nice EP out called Down the Mountain. Then again, I also played some great new songs from mega stars The Black Crowes, Rickie Lee Jones, and The Subdudes.

Till Next Week
Ciao

Tupelo Honey Playlist 10/27/09

After just returning from a week of drinking and debauchery in Los Cabos Mexico I had to play a set of my favorite cantina tunes. Some like "Drunk in Mexico" make for perfect drinkin' tunes, others are Mexican tinged classics that should be sing-a-longs for any Americana fan. Hope you got out the blender, some chips and salsa, a sombrero, some limes and enjoyed the tangent.

BTW if you plan on a trip to Mexico don't forget you ipod. Mexican cantinas have the worst music I've heard in a long time. No local slant, no originality just bad cliche rock tunes. It reminded me of the problems with commercial radio: programing to the lowest common denominator. I heard song after song that I didn't want to hear 15 years ago and I certainly didn't want to hear on my vacation. Thank god I brought an ipod loaded with my favorite cantina songs.

Tupelo Honey Playlist 10/20/09

Got to interview the talented Bowery Boy Blue tonight. They just released an new EP with Lesser Lights, Now We Will Be Brothers. Their 2008 debut CD, Stalk That Myth, was one of the most refreshingly honest and unique discs of last year. The song "Ah, What A Cruel Change" made it on my list of "The 20 Best Americana Songs of 2008." This is a band with a small following but a huge sound. I'm not sure why the mainstream music scene is slow to notice, but this is a band making some phenomenal music. You can see them this Thursday at The Axe & Fiddle in Cottage Grove.

Tupelo Honey Playlist 10/13/09

I've always been a fan of Malcolm Holcombe. His voice sounds like something you can only get from gargling glass or hard, HARD living. Unfortunately I think Malcolm's story is the latter. Drugs and alcohol were going to be his demise. Steve Earle was once quoted as saying Malcolm was "the best singer/songwriter I ever threw out of my studio."

Holcolmbe's been clean and sober for awhile now it sure is nice to see that with that sobriety has come the best album he's ever done. His new CD, For The Mission Baby, was just released and it is spectacular. If you're a fan of his don't miss this one and if you're not, I promise this new disc will make you love that one-of-a-kind, gargled-glass voice.

Tupelo Honey Playlist 10/6/09

Surprise, surprise, surprise!

I was digging around the new release box at the station and decided to give Danny Barnes new disc a listen.

Barnes has been doing his own unique take on the banjo/bluegrass thing for longer then I can remember. I liked some of the stuff he did when he fronted the Bad Livers, but his solo stuff, while interesting, has always left me wondering if I missed the musical portion of the show. Not so with his new release Pizza Box.

My jaw hit the floor when the first song came on and by the end of the CD my tongue was down there too. Absolutely one of the best discs of the year, every track on it is an utter joy to hear. Danny Boy, you my friend have just released one helluva CD!

Tupelo Honey Playlist 9/29/09

Ah the ebb and flow that is americana music. It's amazing how many bands I play have long since disappeared. Tonight I played The Star Room Boys, a band that I thought back in 1995 was going to catapult to the forefront of this genre. One CD and poof, they're gone! However, for every dead soldier another rises to fill the shoes. I just got my hands on the debut release from the L.A. band Old Californio. Just a great new band with a recognizable sound but plenty of uniqueness. No time to whine about the death of any band when new ones like Old Californio keep popping up.
