Tupelo Honey Playlist 12/22/09

The other day I was putting together a list of my favorite Americana CD's of 2009. I decided to cruise the web one more time to make sure I hadn't missed any new releases. Surprise, surprise, I found a disc that is a sure entry into my top picks of the year. Derek Hoke's Goodbye Rock N Roll sounds like the new sound coming out of Nashville: A fusion of old time country, rockabilly, 50's pop and modern Americana. While not a CD I would recommend to music snobs searching for the inner meaning of every lyric, anyone who wants a CD they can put in, press play, and enjoy from beginning to end will love this disc.

Tupelo Honey Playlist 12/15/09

There's a new movie coming out based on Jack Kerouc's semi-autobiographical novel Big Sur. For the soundtrack, Son Volt's Jay Farrar and Death Cab for Cutie's Benjamin Gibbard teamed up to compose a score based around the writing of Kerouc. The result: Farrar and Gibbard have never sounded better. It's rare that I recommend buying a soundtrack, this one is a must own.

When it rains it pours. I've been so excited for this weekend to get here so I can finally see one my all-time favorite bands: Son Volt. This week I find that another all-time favorite band of mine, Hot Club of Cowtown, will also be in town this weekend. It's getting a little late in the year for new releases. I guess the record companies don't like to compete for your holiday dollars. Although my CD inbox is pretty dismal I have been running into some great discs that came out earlier in the year and are just now making it into my hands.

Of note this week are Rick Shea doing a great job of capturing that Bakersfield sound on his new one Shelter Valley Blues. The Wrinkle Neck Mules new one Let The Lead Fly was definitely worth the wait, and The Wiyos, who I can only describe as a mix of Beatbox and Americana, have one of the best discs of the year in Broken Land Bell.

Tupelo Honey Playlist 11/17/09

There's something really rewarding when you watch a band grow over the years. Sometimes they evolve to a point where you feel downright proud to have known them, almost like they're your kids. I feel exactly that way with The Avett Brothers. I've never been a fan but have always been impressed with their grassroots following. Their last two releases have been fantastic with the newest, I And Love and You, being the best to date. They've almost managed to become mainstream and yet they did it in a way that may never be repeated. My hat is off to their success and their great new release. I can't wait to see what they do next.

Played some great new gems this week from people you've never heard of. Doug and Telisha Williams have a wonderful CD out called Ghost of the Knoxville Girl. Judy Tampa and Bunko Squad just released an uninteresting disc with, surprise surprise, a couple of earth shatteringly great tunes. Mark Lennon from L.A. has a very nice EP out called Down the Mountain. Then again, I also played some great new songs from mega stars The Black Crowes, Rickie Lee Jones, and The Subdudes.
