Tupelo Honey Playlist 1/24/12

2012 has just begun and I'm already in love with two new releases. The first is The Great Unknowns belated sophomore release Homefront. In 2003 the band recorded a disc in the basement of their college dorm and handed it out to friends. One of those discs ended up the hands of Indigo Girls Amy Ray. She thought so highly of it she released it on her own label and asked the band to open for her on their next tour. After the tour the four college friends all went in different directions and never cut another album. Until now. The reunion appears to be partially fueled by the front-woman Becky Warren's divorce of her husband and a need to pen songs. Great album, check it out.

The other 2012 release I'm drooling over is Afie Jurvanen's sophomore release Barchords. Afie records under the name Bahamas (I still have no idea why a Canadian with Finnish heritage would chose a Caribbean title). Afie plays piano and guitar for the band Feist so Bahamas is his moonlight job. I loved his first solo release and love this one even better. Check it out: Bahamas - Barchords

I put a ridiculous amount of thought into my "Best of The Year" shows. I know deep down that no one really gives a shit what some volunteer DJ in podunk town thinks is the best song or album, but if you're going to publish your opinion, it seems to me, you had better do your due diligence.

That's why it drives me batty when, after I publish my picks for the year, I find a song or album that I completely missed that's so good it inevitably would have made the list.

Had one of those songs on tonight's show. In 2010 The Mallet Brothers Band was no where near my radar screen. In 2012 I finally heard "Watch You Walk Away." The song would have undoubtedly been on my Top 20 Songs of 2010. Bummer.

I got a new release figuratively stuck in my CD player this week. I say figuratively because I could have ejected it at any time but instead listened to it over-and-over-and-over again.

It's by a unlikely mix - three young siblings from London. The band is Kitty Daisy & Lewis. All the sibs are multi-instrumentalists and take turns on the mic. There incredibly hard to pigeon hole but I'll give it a shot - old time rock n roll meets hipster rockabilly meets a 17-year-old female version of Johnny Cash.

Fun stuff.

As this year winds down I'm still stumbling onto new releases worthy of recognition. There seems to be a run on husband and wife bands, not the least of which is Nashville's Buffalo Clover. It's funny but every song of theirs seems like a cover. It's not, but their music has a familiar feeling to it. Great new disc and I'd be willing to bet they're dynamite live.

Some songs always seem to generate listener calls. Tonight I might have gotten the most calls ever for a song. It was another husband-wife duo, Big Harp. I'm rather surprised but "Out In The Field" really struck a cord.

I hope you got a chance to enjoy the few holiday tunes I through in. Of note was the Indigo Girls "The Wonder Song," a new favorite and the Australian Paul Kelly's "How To Make Gravy." I don't know why but the later sends me to tears every time I hear it.

I stumbled upon Zoe Muth in 2008, a year before she released her debut disc. I was in love with her music the first time I heard it. In fact, Tupelo Honey was the first radio program outside of her hometown to start airing her music. Since that time I've been turning other DJ's and music fans onto her incredible sound.

When she wrote me and said she was coming back to Eugene and asked if we could do a radio interview, I jumped at the chance. Since I've been following her career from its inception and worshiping her music it's got to make for a great radio interview, right?

Either I'm the worst interviewer in the world (highly possible), or the musicians I love don't make for riveting interviews. Whichever the case, I always seem to strike out.

Oh well, when people make music as good as Zoe I certainly don't care how gregarious they are in person.

Nonetheless it was nice to have her back in town, and exciting to hear she's already penning the songs for album #3.

Seriously though, this disc is flying below everyone's radar, mine included. The only reason it ended up in my hands was because my station's program director thought I might like it. Was he ever right.

Big Harp is a husband and wife band (there seems to be a run on them these days). I love how they describe their assent to this CD:

Lots of great live acts coming to town over the next few months. Be sure not to miss Lucinda Williams at The McDonald tomorrow night and the Fruit Bats along with Ages and Ages at the Wow on Thursday.

On Friday Devil Makes Three will step up there gig size by playing The McDonald. For something more intimate check out David Jacobs-Strain at Sam Bond's.

In February we have a couple of huge shows. The Jayhawks will be at The McDonald on Feb 8 and on Feb 3 Wilco will be at the Hult.

I've got a new disc this week that I'm drooling over; It's Mike Musikanto's sophomore release Sky of Dresses. Absolutely beautiful cd, easy to listen to with great songwriting and superb phrasing. It's a disc I'd recommend to anyone. That means you!

I did something tonight I don't normally do: I threw in a 10 minute concert track. I'm always worried a long live-track can make casual listeners lose interest. But, it was one of my favorites and one that always leaves me with an emotional high, I'm hoping the feeling transcended the airwaves. It was Donna the Buffalo's "If You Only Could." If you heard it, give me your two cents, but qualify it first by divulging whether or not your a DTB fan.

One of Coco's class projects is to write letters to family members in her journal. Last week she wrote me and asked if I would play Elizabeth Cook's "El Camino" on my show. She also asked if she could come to the radio station with me one day. I said yes to both and decided she should bring her sister and let them pick the songs for the first half hour of my show.

Concept album? I guess that's what you'd call the new album from Chip Taylor and his band. The idea was to celebrate the people who influenced rock n' roll but never got the limelight. Fair enough, but I don't understand how this album, Rock and Roll Joe, is supposed to work. Most of the songs on it are penned by Chip and most of the material, well, lets just say you'd have to be an insider to know how it relates to rock and roll. But, with that being said, the album is Chip Taylor and Kendel Carson gold. I played Sugar Sugaree tonight, a song that I guess was originally written for Janis Joplin. What a song and what an incredible arrangement.

Check out Rock and Roll Joe, the concept falls flat but the music is spot on.

Tupelo Honey Playlist 9/6/11

I always wonder why some bands "make it" and some don't.

Is it money? I'm sure that's a big part of it. But for all the financially successful bands there's plenty of others that have never made scratch and are still going strong. Others seem to book pretty big gigs and yet still can't keep together.

Is it timing? There's so many disbanded groups that I think would've made it if they could have waited out some hard times. On tonight's show I played The Star Room Boys, a group out of Athens, GA that went tits-up after two incredible albums. Everytime I drag out one of their old albums a give it a radio spin, the phone rings off the hook. Bad timing.

I guess I'll never know why one band makes it and another doesn't. All I know is I'm really grateful to the Drag The River's and Two Cow Garage's and all the other bands driven by something other than the payday.

David Simonett from the americana/bluegrass band Trampled by Turtles has put together a new band called Dead Man Winter. They just released their first full length album titled Bright Lights.

Simonett's songwriting and voice have always been impressive but now, with a country/rock backdrop, his skills are something awe worthy. Great, and I mean GREAT new album. If I had to pick best album of 2011 right now; Dead Man Winter would have my vote.

Check it out, I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

Tim Robbins the actor on an Americana music show?

It's true. The Academy Award winner has just released his first every album. I can't tell you how impressive it is. I always take these celebrity foray's into other mediums with a big friggin' grain of salt but Robbin's new disc is the real deal. It features great songwriting, and I mean great in the way that you want to play the songs over and over just to enjoy the prose. And the musical composition is top notch and plays beautifully with the actor's hushed voice. The only criticism I have is that the cd is a bit melancholy for Tupelo Honey. But, hey, that's nitpicking.

One of my favorite Americana cross-over albums to come out in the last few years was from The Bridge. The album was Blind Man's Hill. The only reason it didn't make my list of best albums of the year was because it came to me 6 months after the year's end.

The great album is equaled by their epic live performances. I understand they have lifelong friends here in Eugene so we've been blessed with regular gigs. The band has announced they'll be splitting up at year's end. So if you'd like a last chance to see this incredible group you'll have to get tickets for this weekend's Black Sheep Family Reunion in Tidewater, OR.

RIP The Bridge, you will be missed.

I had a dream last night that I was front row at a Gillian Welch/Dave Rawlings show. Not a stretch considering I just went to see them last week. But in my dream they came out for the last encore and announced they we're retiring from music and this would be the last tour either of them would ever do.

That's not a dream. That's a nightmare!

I happy to announce that when I awoke it dawned on me that the two of them will be making music long into the future. I'm really enjoying their new album. If you haven't heard it yet or got a chance to see them live I whole heartedly recommend both.

The other day I revisited Malcolm Holcombe's new disc To Drink The Rain. I don't know why sometimes it takes a second listen to realize a great CD, but it happens - alot!

Holcombe's been a man with some pretty severe demons. Steve Earle once said, "Malcolm Holcombe is the best songwriter I ever threw out of my recording studio." However, he now appears to be on the mends. And accordingly his musical output has dramatically increased.

There's so many Americana artists that I wish I'd give more air-time. Holcombe is definitely one of them. Maybe tonight I'll right my wrong.

Without a doubt, the best show of the year took place on Thursday night at Sam Bond's. The Donkey's returned to Eugene despite piss-poor attendance at earlier gigs. I don't know if the folks of Eugene finally became aware of the San Diego based band via radio shows like this one, or whether the stars aligned and everyone just went out to hear some new music. Whatever it was, it was magical. Great music, great crowd, and unbelievable energy.

I propose a toast: To Eugene's best live show of 2011, I think the boys in the band will be having one with us.

Portland based Quiet Life has been leading that list for awhile with "Cave Country." An awesome blend of punk infused alt-country.

However, a recent find might have just knocked them off that top spot. It comes from the Louisiana based Lynn Drury and her unbelievably dance-able (not a usual Americana trait) "Chemical Road."

Tupelo Honey Playlist 6/14/11

Steve Dawson has been a favorite producer of mine for some time. The stuff he's done with Deep Dark Woods and Jim Byrnes is near perfection. I love his ability to coax out a sound without undermining it. His record label, Black Hen Music, has some of the cream of this genre. Steve has also released 5 solo albums and several as a member of a band. Despite his impressive resume I think he might of just released the best record he or his label has ever done.

Steve's new solo CD is called Nightshade. While I've enjoyed all of his albums to date this one is by far my favorite. It's one of those discs that's enjoyable from beginning to end with absolutely no throw-away songs.

I highly recommend that if you don't know Steve Dawson or Black Hen Music you check 'em out. But even more of a recommendation: go out and give Nightshade a spin, I think you'll be impressed.

Zoe Muth's sophomore release has been on the streets for months but has eluded me. Well, finally, I got to give it a listen.

She set such a high bench mark in 2009 with her first album (it was my choice for best album of the year) I knew this new one was doomed. I've seen it so many times: A great release is almost always followed by a dog. With Ms. Muth....Not so!

I can't believe it but I think she might of matched her epic beginning. I've got to give it the test-of-time before I cast a final vote but right now my ears are perked way-the-fuck up. I can't wait to give Starlight Hotel some more spins. I recommend you do the same.

Just got my hands on the new release from Portland-based Quiet Life. Wow! Definitely some of the best tunes I've heard this year. The band opened for Hayes Carll at The Wow Hall a few weeks ago. I didn't make the show but ended up with a copy of their spectacular new release. Prior to their arrival in Eugene I'd never heard of the band. It's amazing the amount of "unknown" bands coming out of Portland. Now that I know Quiet Life I hope we can get 'em back to town.

Well I think I've convinced myself (and my wife) that I have to go to Pickathon this year. The line-up is just too impressive to miss. By accident tonight I played several of the many great performers set to descend on Happy Valley: Elliot Brood and Ray Wylie Hubbard. I think it would be hard for me to do a show and not play one of the bands coming to Pickathon.

Had two discs this week that I had to revisit to realize how great they are. The first was Eugene's own Tyler Fortier. His new album, while dramatically different from the last one (the one I couldn't stop fawning over), is almost equally as impressive. The second was the Lawn Chair Kings. A CD I can't recommend enough.

Everyone I know in the Americana business has been raving about what a great year we're having. Maybe I'm just slow but I haven't been all that impressed with the 2011 output. Don't get me wrong, I've given the thumbs up on most of this year's releases, but I haven't been drooling over them. Well I'm starting to drool.

The Waif's new CD is incredible, Caitlin Rose is right in my wheelhouse, The Black Lillies is drool worthy, Amanda Shires is awesome and Eric Hanke's new CD has grown into one of my absolute favorites.

Tupelo Honey Playlist 4/26/11

I've been admiring the songwriting on Grant Peeples new release Okra and Ecclesiastes, which has to be one of the best CD titles ever, and it got me thinking about what makes a great song.

How many times have you been listening to a tune, found your feet tapping, and then lost all interest once you heard the lyrics? The other side also happens: you find a tune uninteresting but the lyrics draw you in and the more you listen the more you appreciate. It seems that great songwriting is a balance between avoiding cliches but also avoiding artistic isolation.

I can't stand seeing a movie (or reading a book) when I know exactly where the story is going to take me. On the other hand, a film that makes no point and/or seems so self absorbed that I have no ability to own a piece of the story, bores the crap out of me.

More on this later, but for now lets say that songwriting has to leave room for listener interpretation without spelling out the emotions were supposed to feel.

Holy crap, my job isn't to pontificate but to play tunes, I'll shut up now and put on a cd.

Tupelo Honey Playlist 4/5/11

Before I started doing a radio show I, with a few exceptions, hated covers. Every time I'd hear one I'd pine for the original. This was especially true if it was just a straight ahead cover and didn't offer anything new to the tune.

I don't know what happened but lately I've become obsessed with covers. I still favor the ones that bend the genre from the original or have a different take like tempo or accompaniment.

This week I played some really good ones. The top spot has to be Gillian Welch covering the Radiohead tune "Black Star." Also noteworthy was Mason Porter doing The White Stripes "Hotel Yorba," and Buddy Miller and Lee Ann Womack doing the Guy Lombardo/Marty Robbins song "Return to Me."

I'll be out of town for a few weeks so won't be on the air until the 26th. Tupelo Honey will be in the capable hands of Big Tim Little and Mike Meyers. See you in a few weeks.

So far 2011 has seen the release of a lot of good cds. However I haven't had the "wow" response yet, that is until I got hold of Caitlin Rose's Own Side Now.

It's the first full length CD from this young Nashville rising star. She released an EP a couple of years ago that hinted to her abilities but this new full length disc should catapult her to the front of the stage.

She's only 23 but I have a feeling we're witnessing the beginning of a long and successful career.

The other night my wife and I were watching a documentary about, of all things, a parking lot. That alone probably tells you plenty about our lifestyle. The movie is centered around the attendants of a parking lot in Virginia. One of the attendants is shown playing his guitar and singing on a lawn in front of the pay booth. My wife stopped the film and asked if I, the music snob, was impressed. So much so that in 5 minutes I'd found the attendant on-line and downloaded his only album. You can do the same, for free. His name is Mark Schottinger. His music sounds as good on a radio show as a documentary film.

Tupelo Honey Playlist 3/15/11

Without a doubt the surprise CD of the year is G. Love's Fixin' To Die. The idea of G. Love making Americana is just plane weird, but it works, and it works well. The disc was produced by the Avett Brothers, Scott and Seth. Maybe that's why it came out so good. All I know is, its a joy to hear and it stands up to one of the toughest listening tests: It gets better every time you play it.

Lots of other new stuff worth mentioning... Still really liking North Mississippi Allstars' Keys To The Kingdom, Damon Fowler's Devil Got His Way and Jessica Lea Mayfield's Tell Me.

As far as individual songs Aunt Martha's "No Excuses," Greg Allman's "Just Another Rider," and Cowboy Junkies' cover of "Flirted With You All My Life" will all most likely end up on my "Best of 2011" list.

Well the big news in town this week is The Drive-By Truckers show tomorrow night at The McDonald Theatre. I haven't heard if its a sellout but if the community interest is anywhere near as vigorous as the buzz around the station it's going to be a very crowded night.

I've been out of the country the last few weeks so I played a crapload of new releases tonight. I've got some early entries into my "Best of 2011" list. The song No Excuses from Aunt Martha is a strong front-runner. The new albums from North Mississippi Allstars, Johanna Devine (actually a debut disc), and - none other than - The Drive-By Truckers, are all on my early "best of" list.

Without a doubt the find of the week is Doc Dailey and Magnolia Devil. Their debut LP came out 4 months ago and thus far is flying below the radar of most Americana programmers. I'm sure that won't last for long. This band is AMAZING. They're a perfect mix of southern rock, alt-country and Appalachia twang. I got to thank listener Eric Roberts for turning me onto this one. Great find Eric.

If you missed The Wood Brothers show this last Sunday, you missed what might be one of the best shows I've seen in Eugene. They were spectacular last time they were in town and were even better Sunday when they added percussion to their stage show. The crowd was also impressive. They might need to move from The Wow Hall to the McDonald Theatre for their next appearance.

Got a few good new releases to kick off 2011. Gurf Morlix, although beginning to sound a lot like Ray Wylie Hubbard, has another good album. I've never understood the appeal of The Decemberisst, that is, I've never understood it until I got my hands on their new release. Great stuff. Still really loving Eugene's own Jeff Martin's newest disc, I'll be sure to let you know the next time he's gigging in town. Got to thank listener Stephen Flanagan for turning me onto Nathan Bell and his self made gem.

Tupelo Honey Playlist 1/18/11

As usual the year ends, I pick my favorite songs, and then I discover a bunch of music that should have been in my "Best Of" lists.

Two songs I've found in the last week certainly would have made my Best Songs of 2010. First is Austin Collins "Can't Say This At Home." Just a great tune. The other is Jeff Martin's "Song In My Head." Jeff's tune would have ended up in the top 5 and potentially made a run at number one. The whole album also would have made my list of 2010's best discs. Jeff is from Eugene and marks a strong trend of excellent Americana coming out of my backyard. Eugene's Tyler Fortier and Cottage Grove's The Harmed Brothers both had outstanding albums that I seriously considered when picking the best of 2010. Nice to know the music I love and the town I love are merging.

Best Albums of 2010

#1 Patty Griffin - Downtown Church

Recorded in a gorgeous Presbyterian church in downtown Nashville, this album is a compilation of gospel tunes beautifully crafted by producer Buddy Miller. Contributors to this album include Emmylou Harris, Jim Lauderdale, Mike Farris, Raul Malo and gospel all-stars Ann and Regina McCrary. Although an album of covers usually won't be near my list of top 20 this one is so spectacular that I have to catapult it all the way to the number one spot.

#2 Nathaniel Rateliff - In Memory of Loss

Raised in a Missouri town with a population of 60, Nathaniel bolted in his teens to Denver where he worked in a truck-loading yard. An illness laid him off and gave him time to hone his musical side, the results are spectacular. While not technically his first recording (he has an album out with his current band but under the name "The Wheel"), this is his debut using his name. This album is so hauntingly beautiful and touching I recommend you save it until late in the evening when no one is around. I lent this album to another DJ (who I respect). She said she didn't think much of it. I don't respect her anymore.

#3 Frazey Ford - Obadiah

This is the debut solo album for The Be Good Tanyas chief vocalist Frazey Ford. Wonderfully subtle yet soulful, this album keeps finding its way to my CD player. I can't help playing it over and over. Ford's voice might annoy some (she tends to do the retro folk voice-oscillation, e.g., Joan Baez), but if that doesn't derail you I promise there's almost nothing wrong with this charming record.

#4 Sam Quinn - The Fake That Sunk A Thousand Ships

Formerly the male half of the band The Everybodyfields, this debut solo release supposedly was written as therapy for "a real bad year" in Quinn's life. All I know is this album is one of the most touching I've ever heard. I hesitate to recommend it for fear that it only has that effect on me. But through extensive research (playing it for my wife and friend Jim), it does indeed touch everyone, so get out a tissue for you eyes and enjoy.

#5 The Tallest Man on Earth - The Wild Hunt

Why the 5' 6" Sweedish singer Kristian Matsson would call himself "The Tallest Man on Earth" I have no idea. I've theorized but...I'm just guessing. Maybe that's the point: his music is a lot like his name - because you don't know the exact meaning you're forced to apply your own interpretation, and thus, own a piece of the art that is "The Tallest Man on Earth." A extremely subtle album, once you start grasping at his beautiful song writing you'll be forever hooked.

#6 Have Gun, Will Travel - Postcards From the Friendly City

This is the sophomore release for the pride of Tampa Florida. Their debut (Casting Shadows As Tall As Giants) made my Top 10 in 2008 and here they are again in 2010. What I love about this band is their fusion of folk, alt-country and indie-rock. Great songwriting with a nice regional bias puts icing on a truly scrumptious cake. Can't wait to see what the future hold for these young guns.

#7 Shinyribs - Well After Awhile

Have you ever tried to write a song? For most of us its friggin' hard. For The Gourds frontman Kevin "Shinyribs" Russel its so easy that he can't get the time to record them all. What to do? Release some of 'em under a pseudonym. One of the things I love about the Americana genre is its invitation to blend music styles. This record directly blends soul and country, two unlikely bed mates but perfectly matched in this tremendous release.

#8 Caleb Klauder - Western Country

I think Caleb might be possessed by some long-dead 1940's country western recording star (maybe even Hank). His CD's keep getting closer and closer to something released 70 year ago. That's not a criticism, oh no, its praise. Not only does he do it as good or better then those of the past but you also get a top quality recording. This CD is an absolute joy from beginning to end. Put it on and imagine seeing Caleb perform at some 1940's honky tonk.

#9 Mike + Ruthy - Million to One

This husband and wife team seem to be stuck under the heading "folk-rock duo." Whatever. This album, funded in part by fans, fits under my definition of Americana and it is a joy to listen to. Mike and Ruthy (the daughter of Jay Ungar) toured for 7 years as part of The Mammals. They left the band to start a family. Thank goodness for us they did because it led to this tremendous release.

#10 Yvette Landry - Should Have Known

A beautiful mix of song styles, from honky-tonk country, to bluegrass to zydeco form this spectacular debut release. Landry's been in the music biz her whole life but this is the first time out-front with both her guitar and her songs. I worry that she'll fall in the huge crack that exists between Americana and mainstream country. This album deserves equal play in both worlds.

#11 Jimmy Baldwin - Vivador

One of the goofiest bastards in this genre (just look at the album cover for proof), Jimmy has a hoot of a record. The album is surprisingly beautiful despite the obvious comical angle (e.g., "what the world needs now is peace, love and chicken fried steak"). Jimmy's unique harmony dominates a fun and enjoyable record. The Cactus-Headed Troubadour strikes again.

#12 D.B. Rielly - Love Potions and Snake Oil

This guy sounds like he's been recording his entire life, but, believe it or not, this is his debut release. Rielly crafts his songs with catchy hooks albeit from wide ranging genres like blues, zydeco, pop and even mariachi. A beautifully put together record that's hard not to like. One of my criteria for an album to be in my top 20 is that I like or love almost every song on the record. This album easily makes that criteria.

#13 Peter Karp & Sue Foley - He Said She Said

A big surprise from two folks more renown as blues musicians. This album came to exist via the two corresponding while on separate tours. Eventually they started writing together and came up with an album that's supposed to chronicle the ups and downs of relationships from both the male and female perspective, hence the title "He Said She Said." All I know is that it works. And it works much better as an Americana record than a blues one.

#14 Screen Door Porch - Screen Door Porch

This must be the year for debut releases. Another makes my Top 20! This one is courtesy of Jackson Hole, WY. I doubt there's many screen door porches in Wyoming but this duo consists of Seador Rose who hails from North Carolina and Aaron Davis from Kentucky. They started Screen Door Porch in Jackson Hole but now reside in Austin Texas. I got turned on to this duo via a listener from New York, and my show is broadcast in Oregon. I think we got the country about covered. Great debut, I can hardly wait to see what other gems this duo has for us in the future.

#15 Green Whiskey - Triple Shot High

I have a vision of how this band came to be: Two guys in their twenties from a tiny Texas town, writing songs, playing guitars and drinking are hanging out at the local watering hole when they meet a guy in his fifties that's been on the fringe of the music scene his adult life. "Let's make a record." I have no idea if that's how it happened but if I was the script writer... Great alt-country, whiskey infused record. I hope they don't drink the profits.

#16 Glossary - Feral Fire

Glossary is, for me, the icon for new southern rock. I've liked everything these guys have done in the past, but Feral Fire is undoubtedly the best release from the boys from Murfreesboro. It's going to be hard to follow this act. This album is a little less twanged and more rock than their earlier work but in no way does that deter my liking. Turn the amps up to eleven and enjoy.

#17 Old 97's - The Grand Theatre Volume One

Like fine wine these guys just keep getting better. If I had to define the Old 97's sound I'd call it punk-rock infused country, and I'd say its appeal would diminish rapidly the further away you get from 20-years-old. This band is all in their 40's now, as am I... I'm not feeling any less appeal. I think part of the success of this band is the attitude "this is what we do, and this is the sound we make, if you don't like it good for you, but if you do, oh, do we have a party for you."

#18 The Molenes - Good Times Comin'

Somehow the hard twang, alt-country sound of The Molenes is not my vision of the New Hampshire seacoast, but that's where these guy are from and where they do most of their shows. I can't believe I missed the previous two releases from this group. If those other discs were even close to Good Times Comin' they're worth finding.

#19 Pieta Brown - One and All

If my wife leaves me we've come to an agreement that I have permission to marry Pieta Brown. So I'll try not to sound biased. While One and All isn't her best disc its still an easy choice to make my Top 20 for 2010. Pieta is the daughter of Greg Brown so she's known the music business her whole life (her step mother is Iris DeMent). Her voice is truly mesmerizing and this CD makes an unbelievably gorgeous lullaby.

#20 John Mellencamp - No Better Than This

Talk about low-fi: this album was recorded in 13 days with a portable 1950's Ampex mono tape machine. From the recording to letting minimalist T-Bone Burnett produce it, to the throw-back subject matter, this disc was destined to be a favorite of mine. You got to love it when superstars do something that doesn't advance their careers but instead advances their passion. The Cougar made a gem!

It's that time of year where I start driving myself crazy agonizing over my picks for Best Album of the Year. I realize that no one, and I mean NO ONE, gives a shit what some guy in Eugene thinks is a good or bad record, but in some ways that makes my selections all that much more special. I'm not trying to impress anyone or win any favors or promote some artist because I think they deserve it, the choice and motivations for that choice are completely personal.

Those personal choices are coming up: Next Tuesday (Jan 4) I'll play my choice for the Top 20 Songs of 2010, and the following Tuesday I'll play some songs from my choice for the Top 20 Albums of 2010.

I love finding Christmas songs that aren't Christmas songs. The old standards are just that - old! There's plenty of good new holiday tunes but the ones I really love are the ones that have nothing to do with Christmas but put me in the mood. Some examples: The Pretenders -"2000 Miles," Joe Henry - "I Flew Over Our House Last Night."

Well I just came across a new favorite. The tune is "Upstairs" from Kevin Brown's new CD The County Primaries. Give it a spin and see if you get the same holiday feeling.

He's a Louisiana native that only recently picked up a guitar and started writing songs. He has three records to his credit but this new one, "Sharecroppers Whine," is a must own.

I always have a handful of new songs that I love to play for people willing to hear some new music. Usually the handful is what I consider to be the most easily like-able new music I've been hearing. Sometimes it's also music that I'm absolutely in love with. Right now most of those "new songs" that I'm displaying for friends are from The David Wax Museum. Yeah, I know, a ridiculous name for a band, but, the music is an utter joy. They're songs I'm head-over-heels for but I can't imagine there's anyone who wouldn't feel that way. A mix of folk, americana, and traditional mexicana. Put on "The Persimmon Tree," I promise your toes will start tapping and a smile will creep up on you.

Every radio show I try to include at least one song from the past that gives an idea of where this genre came from. Kind of my way of honoring the founding fathers of Americana.

However, its hard not to notice that the heyday of Americana isn't some time in the past, it's right now! There's more bands churning out this music then ever before. And, more of them doing a damn good job of it. Every sub genre of modern Americana has a current artist doing it as good or better then anyone in the past. I put up a picture of American Aquarium, a band doing alt-country rock as good as anything I've ever heard.

Eugene has an absolutely incredible weekend of live Americana music coming up. It starts on Thursday when Leslie and the Badgers will be opening for Laura Veirs at Sam Bond's. Friday don't miss the incredible local talent Tara Stonecipher at the Wandering Goat Coffee Company. On Saturday, a band that's pee-your-pants funny, The Two Man Gentlemen Band will be with Sassparilla at the Axe and Fiddle. On Sunday Sam Bond's has Unkle Nancy and the Wow Hall hosts Danny Barnes, Great American Taxi and Emmitt-Nershi Band.

All great shows! Hope I get to see you at one of 'em.
